“Confronting the challenges; sharing lessons, building local solutions”

This event is jointly provided by Minding the Gap, the Department of Health and the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA). It is one of a series of JSNA events being held in various English regions in 2010. It follows the JSNA workshop held in July 2009 to enable key practitioners working on JSNA to take stock on the progress made to date in the establishment and development of JSNA within the Yorkshire and Humber region and nationally, and to consult with them on the types of support needed at a regional level to ensure JSNA is effectively informing policy and commissioning decisions and impacting on health inequalities.

The workshop in July 2009 identified a number of key areas where JSNA lead officers called for extra support, in particular:

Improving the relationship between JSNA and commissioning

Aligning the JSNA more closely with the future vision for local places

Strengthening stakeholder engagement, particularly in terms of securing increased involvement of directors of Adult Services and Directors of Children’s services and wider engagement and awareness across councils and partnerships

Strengthening community and third sector engagement in the JSNA process

The outcomes from the workshop were fed back to the JSNA National Reference Group, which is responsible for overseeing the ongoing development and implementation of JSNA. In response, the Reference Group commissioned various projects and initiatives to meet the support needs of local areas and regions.

Conference Aims

April 1st 2010 marks the second anniversary of the duty placed on local councils and health partners to undertake Joint Strategic Needs Assessment.

This conference will bring together delegates from councils, health agencies and other partner organisations with an interest in, and responsibility for, developing or using JSNA to develop practical approaches to the issues and challenges they are facing in undertaking JSNA and to share lessons and learning from across the Yorkshire and Humber region and nationally.

Keynote speakers

To be confirmed

Conference Outcomes

The event will provide delegates with the opportunity to:

Learn from the commissioning and JSNA national project about how to improve the relationship between JSNA and commissioning and to hear about examples of good practice

Explore different approaches to strengthening community engagement in the JSNA process, including the Asset Based Model of Community Development and practical steps to take this forward

Debate how local councils can more effectively align JSNA with Sustainable Community Strategies and Local Development Frameworks as part of their ‘place’ agenda

Consider how JSNA can be used to inform work with a focus on the social determinants of health

Address the issue of how to improve leadership of JSNA in council structures and decision making processes

Contribute to the development of a JSNA benchmark

Explore the idea of a peer-to-peer mentoring and support resource involving other regions

Who’s invited

Delegates from local government and the health sector in the Yorkshire and Humber region are welcome, including:

LSPs (Local Strategic Partnerships) health and well being chairs and coordinators

Board members, Executive Directors and Non-Executive Directors of Councils and NHS organisations

Directors of Public health, Adult Services and Children’s Services and joint appointments

Public health professionals and practitioners

Planning officers

Managers from local authorities, PCTs, Schools, Colleges, Police and LSP organisations

Service commissioners with responsibility for improving health outcomes and tackling health inequalities

Policy leads in councils and NHS organisations

Council leaders and councillors engaged in health scrutiny or who are health portfolio holders

Costs and booking

There is no charge to delegates attending this event. To book a place, please complete the attached booking form and return to:

mindingthegap@bradford.gov.uk.

Hull was selected from these to be one of twenty sites to participate in a more in-depth evaluation to identify the benefits of personal health budgets for health and the patient groups who will benefit most from them. The pilot programme is set to launch on the 1 April 2010 and will run until 2012.

We believe that this personalisation agenda could give better experiences and better care by giving patients as much control over their healthcare as is appropriate for them. The launch event is an opportunity to hear from a variety of speakers including more information on the local pilot, the national perspective; as well as hearing directly from a service user about the impact of a personal care budget on their health and social care.
