You are invited to the MND Special Interest Group study day. This event is free and the perfect opportunity for your staff to continue with their professional development.

You are invited to the MND Special Interest Group study day. This event is free and the perfect opportunity for your staff to continue with their professional development. Included below is some brief information about MND, however it is the aim of those working with MND in the Hull & East Riding area and the Motor Neurone Disease Association to increase the quality of care for those living with this frequently unheard of, devastating and fatal disease through the promotion and education of those professionals who may come into contact with a person with MND.

Places are limited (first come first served basis), though the good news is that we do still have some places left!

You will however need to bring your own lunch or purchase it in the canteen so that we can make this event available to you at no cost to you.

This study day will take you on a patient journey through MND with input from the various professionals who would be involved in the care of a patient with MND and so will be valuable to any professional working within Social Care, Hospital Settings, OT’s, Physio’s, District Nurses, Care Home staff, Domiciliary Care workers and those within voluntary organisations.

If you require any more infomation please contact either Colin Pearson 07831 865329 or Vanessa Baker 01482 674208 (MND Specialist Nurse – HRI).

Bookings should be made through the MND Conference Team – conference@mndassociation.org

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a devastating progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurones. This disease is terminal and the majority of those who have this disease deteriorate rapidly as degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing.

Motor Neurone Disease is not infectious or contagious.

It can affect any adult at any age but most people diagnosed with the disease are over the age of 40, with the highest incidence occurring between the ages of 50 and 70

Men are affected approximately twice as often as women.

The incidence or number of people who will develop MND each year is about two people in every 100,000

The prevalence or number of people living with MND at any one time is approximately seven in every 100,000

More information regarding Motor Neurone Disease can be found here – http://www.mndassociation.org/life_with_mnd/what_is_mnd/index.html

Local support can be gained through the MNDA’s Hull & East Yorkshire Support Group and more details can be found at http://www.mndassociation.org/life_with_mnd/local_support/yorkshire_and_the_humber/hull_east_1.html

This course is sponsored by the Public Health Directorates of NHS Hull and NHS East Riding of Yorkshire

Depression can be misunderstood, yet it affects people of all ages, and is a common mental health problem.

Being older doesn’t mean that you’ll become depressed. Episodes of depression can be triggered off by stressful events, especially those which involve loss, and older people are quite likely to suffer important loss.

Early recognition of depression and knowing what practical steps to take can mean that people get help when they need it and minimize the effect on their everyday living, thus improving the quality of life of the older person with depression.

The aims of the training are:

To promote an awareness of mental health problems in later life

To understand:

The signs and symptoms of depression

The prevalence of depression

The stigma attached to depression in later life

What treatment options are available including self help

How to support someone who has a mental health problem

What support Age UK can offer

Who will benefit from this training?

Staff and volunteers from:

Health and Social care settings, including domiciliary and residential care

Voluntary organisations and charities

Sheltered housing schemes

Faith Communities

Closing date for applications: 13th January 2012

Please note that there will be a charge of £50 for non or part attendance (at least two weeks notice of cancellation needs to be provided)

The NHS Future Forum has published its latest set of reports, including the results of its consultation on integrated care.

The NHS Future Forum has published its latest set of reports, including the results of its consultation on integrated care. Hull LINk made a response to this consultation in November 2011 based on feedback from our members.

Professor Steve Field, chair of the forum, said:

‘We have heard an enormous amount of support for the shift to patient-centred care but also frustration that this has not yet been achieved. This must now become a reality for patients across England, and health and social care professionals must lead the way.’

The report, which has been accepted by the government, includes recommendations to make care centred around the patient, not the system. Key recommendations include:

Guidance for commissioning services should be focussed on commissioning for people, not specific diseases.

Every patient with long-term or complex needs should have a named person or team to co-ordinate all points of their care.

All care records should be electronic and accessible at the point of care, regardless of provider.

New patient reported experience measures that evaluate patients’ experiences across the whole of their care should be developed.

Local commissioners should explore the benefits of joint commissioning and pooled budgets.

The forum has also published reports on: education and training; information; and the NHS’s role in the public’s health. You can download the reports at http://healthandcare.dh.gov.uk/forum-report/
