Alcohol Services

Issue:

Lack of local services for alcohol treatment and aftercare.

Project Leads:

Jonathan Appleton, Hull LINk Team Leader

Sam Bell, Steering Group member

This group has explored the provision of alcohol treatment services in Hull. It has looked at NHS services and also voluntary and community services. The work on this priority has included asking users about their experiences of services. Early research on this issue indicated that there is concern about a lack of services in the city, so the research also explored what services people would like to see provided. Work conducted:

  • Research into local and national policy, including the new Alcohol Strategy has been conducted.
  • Research has been conducted into local services i.e. what is available and how services are accessed.
  • Discussions have been held with NHS services, including Humber Foundation Trust and Action For Change (new service provider commissioned to run a local service).
  • Discussions have taken place with local VCS services and support groups including Abstain; Alcoholics Anonymous; Alcohol Project; CDP.
  • Two surveys have been conducted to collect peoples views. One survey was directed at patients, the other was directed at health workers.

The results of the surveys are now bening analysed and will be collated into a report with recommendations. This report is due to be published in August 2010.

Our findings have been presented in a report containing recommendations for improving services and patients’ experiences. This report has been submitted to NHS Hull, Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals, Humber Foundation Trust and Hull City Council. The full report can be viewed below:
