Patient Transport
Issue:
Problems getting to local hospitals, particularly when travelling from certain parts of the city.

This group focused on the transport services available to patients who are travelling from all areas of the city to Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital. The group looked at the services currently provided by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, who is eligible for these services, how well informed people are of their eligibility and how well publicised these services are. The group also considered public transport and other options available to patients. As part of the wider transport theme, the group also gathered opinions on hospital parking as this too was raised as an issue. From the research gathered, the group was able to determine if there are any gaps in the current service provision and whether there is any disparity in access from different parts of the city. These findings have been presented in a report containing recommendations for improving services and patient’s experiences.
Work conducted:
- Engagement with relevant community groups.
- Two surveys were conducted to collect peoples views. One survey was directed at patients, the other was directed at health workers. Over 370 responses were received.
- A enter and view visit was conducted at Castle Hill Hospital to collect people’s views as they were arriving and leaving hospital.
- A formal information request was made to the Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust in relation to car parking an plans for improvements/expansions.
- Research was conducted in to local transport provisions and the eligibility for these services.
All findings have now been compiled into a report with formal recommendations. The report has been submitted to NHS Hull, Hull & East Yorkshire Hospital Trust, Hull City Council and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

The leaflet was developed in response to our investigation and other research which showed that there was a lack of awareness among patients as to who is entitled to use PTS.
